Made by a Chemist. Proudly American.

At Black Mountain Tanning, we believe in using the whole animal — not just the meat. It's a principle as old as hunting itself, and one that too many modern tanners have made unnecessarily complicated, toxic, or expensive.

Our Story

I'm a chemist by training and an outdoorsman by passion. After years of hunting and trapping, I wanted to tan my own furs — the way it should be done. But what I found was a mess: old folk recipes with no scientific basis, products loaded with harsh and toxic chemicals, and commercial solutions designed for taxidermists — not home tanners, hunters, trappers and homesteaders.  So I did what any stubborn chemist would do: I went back to the science.

After rigorous research, development and safety testing, we invented professional formulas that actually work in a home setting, with cold well water, in an unheated shop, without toxic fumes. The results spoke for themselves: soft, durable leather that honored the animal and the effort it took to harvest it.

I founded Black Mountain Tanning because I knew other hunters, trappers, and homesteaders deserved access to the same quality — without needing a chemistry degree or a commercial tannery. We create the most ethical, innovative and effective fur tanning products with the goal to preserve tradition through a strong conservation ethic.

Made in the USA. Safe & Biodegradable

Every product we make is formulated and manufactured in the USA. Our formulas are safe, biodegradable, and designed to work in real home conditions — cold water, hard water, high iron, you name it. Whether you're tanning your first raccoon or processing a full season's worth of hides, our products are built to make the process approachable, safe, and effective.

Built for Hunters, Trappers & Homesteaders

We're proud to support the people who live closest to the land — hunters, trappers, homesteaders, and conservationists across America. When you buy from Black Mountain Tanning, you're supporting a small American business that believes in the tradition, the land, and the people who work it.

Because when you use the whole animal, you honor the tradition. 🇺🇸
